I finally decided to try the (relatively) new joint, Stocked at 635 Vanderbilt Avenue in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. They have a selection of sandwiches, salads, prepared foods, rotisserie chicken, among other things. From what I can tell, this place is extremely kid-friendly, featuring a special menu and even a weekly sing-along.
The staff is great, and always happy to recommend something to try. On my first visit, I was undecided about what to get. Fortunately we narrowed it down to the house-made roast beef, with watercress, pickled beets, and horseradish aioli on ciabatta.
Done. I never need eat anything else ever again. It was the best roast beef sandwich that I have ever had. EVER. I recommend you rush out right now and get a few.
The other items I have tried:
– Capicola style Roast Pork, broccoli rabe, provolone on ciabatta
Very, very good, but eat right away or it will soak through the bread (I let mine sit for probably 20 minutes).
– Crispy Chicken, sriracha aioli, pickled vegetables on potato roll
Pretty darn good. No complaints here.
– House-made turkey, apple onion jam, manchego, frisee on multigrain bread
Very fresh tasting.
– Gazpacho (Seasonal Soup)
Perfectly delicious gazpacho. I ordered it repeatedly. It is pureed, which for me is a must – I don’t do chunky gazpacho.
– Cobb Salad, Romaine, bacon, blue cheese, tomato, avocado, croutons, hard-boiled eggs, creamy red wine vinaigrette
This was my one disappointment. After the amazing roast beef sandwich, this was a huge let-down. Maybe it is more impressive if you get it to stay, but when I got home and took it out of the bag, I was severely underwhelmed for the price. It was pretty basic, but mostly I felt it was too abundant in romaine, and not abundant enough in toppings. I would love it SO much if Stocked would ramp up its salads to the level of Balthazar Bakery.
I look forward to when the BLAT comes back, because that is next on my list. Until then, it is nice to enjoy a meal as much as I enjoy Stocked’s roast beef sandwich. It is a treat that I afford myself a little too often!
