How Happy Are Your Herbs?

After trying several different recommendations on how to store fresh herbs like dill, cilantro, parsley, mint and basil in the fridge, by far the best luck I have had, is with this method:

  • trim the ends of the bunch, like you would a bouquet of flowers (DO NOT wash herbs until ready to use – and then only the portion you are using)
  • place in a glass or other container with about 1-2 inches of water
  • place a plastic bag (such as Ziploc-type storage bag, or the produce bag from the supermarket) over the top of the bunch
  • using a rubberband, “seal” the bottom of the bag to the container
  • replace the water as necessary

Voila!  I can get my herbs to last 1-3 weeks in the fridge this way, and the only down side is that they tend to take up quite a bit of room (NOTE – I have a small, non-standard size fridge).
