After trying several different recommendations on how to store fresh herbs like dill, cilantro, parsley, mint and basil in the fridge, by far the best luck I have had, is with this method:
- trim the ends of the bunch, like you would a bouquet of flowers (DO NOT wash herbs until ready to use – and then only the portion you are using)
- place in a glass or other container with about 1-2 inches of water
- place a plastic bag (such as Ziploc-type storage bag, or the produce bag from the supermarket) over the top of the bunch
- using a rubberband, “seal” the bottom of the bag to the container
- replace the water as necessary
Voila! I can get my herbs to last 1-3 weeks in the fridge this way, and the only down side is that they tend to take up quite a bit of room (NOTE – I have a small, non-standard size fridge).
